About Eastport

Laid-back Eastport, just across the bridge from downtown Annapolis, is an eclectic mix of charming homes and gardens, marinas and maritime businesses, eateries, pubs, and small shops. Bordered by Back and Spa Creeks, the cozy Eastport peninsula sits at the mouth of the Severn River on the Chesapeake Bay. Residents like to walk or ride bikes to nearby dining spots (some with water views), go boating and fishing on the Chesapeake and its tributaries, and explore the creeks on kayaks and paddleboards. There’s plenty to see and do here, and lots of history.

A century ago, Eastport was almost a self-sufficient village, with neighborhood businesses supplying necessities. Locals were deeply involved in the maritime industry ─ harvesting and shucking oysters, fishing, crabbing, and boatbuilding at the boatyards that lined the shore.

The Annapolis Yacht Yard, founded on Spa Creek in 1937, built luxury yachts until World War II, when it started supplying subchasers and motor torpedo boats for the war effort. In 1948 the Trumpy family bought the property, where they designed and built hand-crafted mahogany yachts. Their most famous boat, the USS Sequoia, was constructed in New Jersey and served as the presidential yacht from 1931 to 1977. The Trumpy yacht yard in Eastport closed in 1973; today the location houses businesses and popular restaurants, including The Chart House.

Eastport is a community with personality, soul, and a sense of humor. In 1998, when the bridge between Annapolis and Eastport was closed for repair, locals founded the satirical “Maritime Republic of Eastport” to promote Eastport businesses and avoid losing tourist dollars. To highlight its uniqueness from Annapolis, the MRE motto is, “We like it this way.” Now the MRE sponsors an annual tug of war across Spa Creek and a 0.05K bridge run, “The least challenging athletic event ever conceived,” and donates proceeds to charity. Because Eastport has a good heart.
